Current recommendations from various travelers:
* Hertz, Avis, National, Enterprise: Yes.
* Budget, Alamo: No way.
* Book in advance.
* Completely fill out the "pre-existing damage" form and have the attendant
sign it and give you a signed copy. Document every scratch and ding.
Retain the copy for several months.
* Take pictures of your rental car before you pull out of the lot.
Save the pictures for several months in case they try to bill you later for
pre-existing damage.
* Gas up at a gas station, before returning the car - not at the rental car location.
It's a lot cheaper.
* Don't exceed the allotted daily mileage listed in the contract, unless it's unavoidable
or you don't want to be bothered with such pesky details. Rates for excessive mileage
are hefty.
* If you're not booking a package deal of airline/car/hotel, book through AAA or AARP
for better rates,
* Insurance: Maybe. If your home or auto policy covers a more expensive rental
car, then use that. But if it doesn't cover rentals or MORE EXPENSIVE cars,
you'd better purchase insurance from the car rental company to be sure you're
covered. If you're not sure, check your policy or check with your agent.
If you're still not sure, buy the insurance. Better safe than sorry.
* Wear your seatbelt and turn on your headlights.
* If abducted by aliens, be sure to check the date and your gas gauge upon your return.
It may be later than you think, due to "missing time", and your rental car may be overdue
and low on gas.
